PRP for Hair Loss – stop losing hair and stimulate hair regrowth using PRP Injections
PRP for Hair Loss provides a new and natural option to treat this incredibly common concern for both men and women. While there can be many contributing factors, Androgenetic Alopecia (AGA) or pattern hair loss is most commonly attributed to an increase in dihytrotestosterone (DHT) levels, due to hereditary factors. Other medical conditions such thyroid disorders, polycystic ovary syndrome, anemia, chronic illness, or the use of certain medications and oral contraceptive can increase hair loss.
Pattern hair loss tends to increase with age and is most common in Caucasian people. Up to 30% of males are affected by the age of 30, with this increasing to 50% by the age of 50 and by the age of 70, up to 80% of men are affected. Around 13% of females of premenopausal women show some signs of hair loss. This increases dramatically post menopause with up to 70% of women over the age of 65 years being effected.
The most important decision you can make is early medical intervention when you first detect hair loss. The goal is to prolong the hair follicle life cycle and enable regrowth – once the hair follicle has died, it cannot be repaired and hair loss will be permanent.
PRP for Hair Loss offers a non-surgical, non-hormonal and totally natural treatment for hair loss or hair thinning. It is an injectable treatment that uses the patient’s own concentrated platelets to trigger a healing process that restores blood flow and improves the health, function and duration of hair follicles during their growth phase.
WHO CAN HAVE PRP FOR HAIR LOSS?
PRP for hair loss is suitable for men and women who are concerned about hair thinning, hair loss or hair shedding. This treatment is ideal for people who are not ready for, or do not want to undergo invasive surgery such as a hair transplant. Because PRP is a natural product derived from your body’s concentrated blood platelets and bioactive proteins it’s also a good option for people who don’t want to rely on a daily drug intake to treat hair loss. As a natural treatment, PRP is suitable for nearly everyone and has minimal side effects.
Academy Face and Body recommend using the advanced Emcyte PurePRPII system for hair loss, which produces the highest concentrations of PRP (6x base levels), meaning less treatments are required for great results. However, we can offer lower concentration and lower costs systems, but more treatments are required – please ask about the available options.
PRP FOR HAIR LOSS RESULTS?
Most patients report a noticeable improvement with their hair between 2 and 3 months after completing their treatment program. With PurePRPII, we recommend a program of three treatments approximately 4-6 weeks apart, with an annual top up to maintain follicle health. Weaker PRP concentrations will require more treatment sessions over a longer period.
Results will vary from patient to patient and according to how far through the hair growth cycle they are when treatment is undertaken. There are four phases in this cycle:
Anagen Phase – the active growth phase of hair follicles lasting from 2-7 years and determines the length of our hair
Catagen Phase – a short regression phase when the hair follicle shrinks and detaches from the dermal papilla
Telogen Phase – the resting phase lasting around 3 months. Whilst the old hair is resting a new hair begins the growth phase
Exogen Phase – the period when the resting hair loosens and is shed.
Over time, the length of the Anagen phase decreases, therefore, the hair may become weaker and thinner after each cycle. If hairs enter the resting phase too early, excess shedding and noticeable thinning can occur. The objective of PRP scalp injection therapy is to improve blood flow and trigger healing of deficient hair follicles, encouraging hair to remain in the growth phase, rather then enter the rest phase or die too early.
Studies show that PRP produces good results for hair rejuvenation by prolonging the Anagen Phase sop there are more hairs at any given time. Increased hair count and improved hair thickness are clinically observed outcomes.*
Our Doctors may also recommend and prescribe medication such as Finasteride – an oral blocker of DHT conversion or Minoxidil (for women) as PRP works well in combination with these treatments and further enhances their benefits.
The first step is for your initial consultation with one of our doctors or cosmetic nurses. During this consultation, we will assess the causes of your hair loss and review any treatment history. You will discuss your hair loss concerns, what you hope to achieve and an appropriate treatment program will be recommended. During this session, you’ll have the opportunity – and indeed we encourage you – to ask any questions that you may have about PRP scalp injection therapy.
The most important rule in treating hair loss in men and women is obtaining the correct diagnosis. A good physician is always evaluating and looking the underlying physical problem, before recommending a treatment program. Our practitioners may refer you for Diagnostic Tests before scheduling PRP injection therapy or prescribing any other treatment options.
The first stage of the treatment is the platelet extraction – simply taking some blood. A medical device is then used to separate and harvest anti-inflammatory white blood cells, bioactive proteins, plasma and platelets. The creation of PurePRPII takes about 20 minutes.
Next, an electric micro-needling pen may be used all over the area to be treated. This creates thousands of tiny holes in the skin dermis, triggering a collagen induction process. Following this, the highly concentrated PRP (normally 6 – 7ml) is injected by hand via syringes, in a 1cm grid pattern.
Our experienced injectors are highly skilled to ensure that this process is as comfortable as possible. Numbing cream, analgesic and ice will be used to reduce discomfort. You will experience some redness to the scalp and there may be some swelling that should settle down within 24 – 48 hours. A cranial anaesthetic block is possible with our doctors if the procedure is too uncomfortable.
A series of three (or more) treatment sessions will be required and we recommend an annual booster to extend follicle health.
Any swelling or irritation should subside within 48 hours, please contact the clinic if this isn’t the case. You may also experience a mild headache. Detailed post treatment instructions will be provided to you at the clinic, which you should follow precisely.
We also suggest using a home skin needling device to ensure constant stimulation of collagen. This can be purchased at the clinic.
HOW LONG DOES PRP FOR HAIR LOSS LAST?
For the majority of patients, the most obvious gains in hair regeneration and growth occurs about 2 months after each treatment and 3 treatment sessions are recommended approximately 4 – 6 weeks apart. We then recommend top up treatment every 12 months to prolong the health of hair follicles, although some patients may go up to two years between top up sessions.
HOW MUCH DOES PRP FOR HAIR LOSS COST?
Initial doctor consultation has a fee or you may schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our registered nurses. The fee for PurePRP treatment can be found here:
AM I UNSUITABLE?
Because PRP is a natural element of the body, there isn’t any risk of allergic reaction, rejection or vessel occlusion – the treatment is a suitable options for almost anyone wanting to treat hair loss. However, there are some people for whom the treatment may not be suitable – these include patients with a history of heavy drug or alcohol use, or pre-exiting conditions such as cancer, platelet dysfunction syndromes, chronic skin disease, chronic liver disease, hypofibrinogenemia and thrombocytopenia. Your suitability for this treatment will be established at your initial consultation and if necessary, alternative treatment options will be explained.
